This new hanging of works from Rochechouart's permanent collection is an open invitation to explore night-time from the first pricking of stars at dusk to the dawn of a new day. The title, Because the Night comes from American singer Patti Smith's 1978 song which dwells on visions torn between nocturnal dreams and desires.
The exhibition itself shifts from dreams to death, plunges from microcosm to cosmos, from eternal cycles to suspended animation. Mankind's relationship to the dark hours has changed considerably over the ages. Originally experienced with predatory fear and trepidation, we have gradually conquered night by constantly eating away at the inevitability of physical phases of light and darkness. Night-time could be considered as a symbol of how we have evolved in our connections with time and nature.
